Local group Citizens United for the Reduction of the cost of Electricity (CURE) secured a landmark ruling today after Justice Bryan Sykes rules that the exclusive license granted to the Jamaica Public Service is invalid under the Electric Lighting Act. Judge Sykes stated that the Minister does not have the power to grant the license which bars other suppliers from entering the market for 1) the transmission of electricity and 2) prevent suppliers from having their applications from being considered genuine. The presiding Judge however stated that the Minister does have the autority to grant a license one operator to supply electricity to the entire island. Following the ruling the Jamaica Public Service requested a stay of judgement and both sides were to have met at 6pm this evening. it is unknown if the JPS will seek an appeal.
