NEWS: schools to benefit from 'Sparkle' involving the late Whitney Houston

The film Sparkle will open in Jamaica today at 5:30 p.m., a day ahead of its premiere worldwide. Sparkle is the last movie involving the late Whitney Houston and stars American Idol winner Jordin Sparkes and actor Mike Epps.

The movie is being staged by the civic-minded group, Jamaica West, and proceeds from the event will benefit 10 basic schools in western Jamaica.

The event takes place at the Palace Multiplex Cineplex, Fairview Shopping Complex in Montego Bay.

The movie is about a musical prodigy Sparkle (Jordin Sparks), who struggles to become a star while overcoming issues that are tearing her family apart.

Hailing from an affluent Detroit area, Sparkle is the daughter of a single mother (Whitney Houston) who the screen finds in the precarious position of trying to balance a new romance with music manager, Stix (Derek Luke), while dealing with the unexpected challenges of a new life. That new life comes as she and her two sisters, Sister (Carmen Ejogo) and Dolores (Tika Sumpter), strive to become a singing group during the Motown era.

While all of this is happening, the plot thickens as Sister begins an affair with an abusive, treacherous drug lord, Satin (Mike Epps).
